Our Story

The North Chatham Historical Society was founded in 1997 with a simple purpose: to preserve and share the history of North Chatham and the surrounding area.

Our collection tells the story of a community that has changed considerably over time—from a largely agricultural landscape and bustling commercial hamlet to the rural community we know today. Photographs, diaries, letters, maps, newspapers, business ledgers, deeds, military records, and other materials offer glimpses into the people, places, businesses, and everyday moments that shaped life here across generations.

For many years, the Society was led by longtime president George Vollmuth, whose extraordinary knowledge of North Chatham history and dedication to its preservation helped build the collection we care for today. George also funded and meticulously restored one of the community's most recognizable historic landmarks: the North Chatham Trolley Station, once a stop on the Albany and Hudson Electric Railway.

Today, that station is home to our archives and part of an exciting new chapter for the Historical Society. With a revitalized board and renewed community involvement, we're building on the work that came before us while finding new ways to make North Chatham's history accessible, engaging, and relevant to the people who live here now.

We believe local history is more than a record of the past. It's a way to better understand the place we call home—and one another.

Through research, preservation, educational programming, exhibitions, events, and community participation, we bring together the stories that make North Chatham North Chatham. Some are remarkable. Others capture the routines of everyday life. Together, they reveal how people lived, worked, built businesses, raised families, served their community, adapted to change, and made this place their own.

LOOKING FORWARD BY LOOKING BACK

Preservation is only part of what we do. We're also working to make the history we preserve easier to explore and share.

In 2024, the Society's archival collection moved into a dedicated storage space within the restored North Chatham Trolley Station. We're continuing the careful work of organizing, documenting, preserving, and expanding access to these materials while developing new opportunities to put them to use through research, education, exhibitions, and community programming.

Because history doesn't belong behind a closed door. It belongs to all of us—and we want as many people as possible to be part of what comes next.
